The Alley celebrates social media seminar success

Strabane’s Alley Theatre was at the centre of the digital world on Friday, September 17th, as it hosted the groundbreaking “Like – Building Digital Networks” conference. Over 260 people involved in the arts industries and New Media courses ...from across the North West took part in interactive social media workshops, whilst listening to expert social media commentators including Derry’s Digital champion Mark Nagurski and Mark O’Flaherty, Platform Director from BT.

“This unique social networking conference, supported by BT and the Strabane Chronicle, with funding from Arts & Business has made a major impact in revealing the social media opportunities that are available to people online” commented John Kerr Alley Theatre Manager. “This intensive day, which not only involved keynote speakers on social media, but it also provided a series of educational interactive workshops from Derry’s Nerve Centre social media tutors. Today will leave an amazing legacy within the North West and we would like to thank all our funders and sponsors for making this wonderful event possible.”

Peter Morris Consumer Director, BT, said “Supporting young people in developing their online and entrepreneurial skills is something that we are passionate about at BT – nothing demonstrates this more clearly than our long history of involvement with the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. Events like today can show people how to use social media tools to best effect. Through continual investment in our own innovations such as BT Infinity we continue to drive online capability providing users with an even greater online experience. Congratulations to all the team at the Alley for putting on such a successful innovative event today”

"Some people assume that everyone under the age of 30 knows all they need to know about social media but in reality, getting yourself known online, in the arts or business, is a skill that needs developed. With this in mind, it was great to see so many local people taking an active interest in doing just that and I hope there'll be more events like this in the future." Mark Nagurski, Digital Champion for Derry

Beverly Coomber from Arts and Business NI commented ““Arts & Business Northern Ireland is delighted to support The Alley Arts & Conference Centre to develop its creative partnerships with its local and national business sponsors through the Reach Investment Programme. We would congratulate BT and NWIPP for working with the Alley on this fun and educational interactive seminar”.

Border youth highlight respect and diversity in the North West.

Last week saw Strabane’s Alley Theatre and the Balor Arts Centre, Ballybofey present a dramatic theatrical conclusion for this summer’s Border Youth Drama Project. Presented to packed audiences in both venues, this groundbreaking arts scheme, supported by IFI (International Fund For Ireland), has been exploring various themes of diversity, peace and reconciliation over the summer holidays, culminating in a stage performance of song, music, comedy and drama.

“Border Youth is now a firmly established success story in the North West, bringing together over 40 young people from Donegal and Tyrone in a collaborative project that leaves a lasting legacy of theatre skills and friendship between young participants in the border areas” commented Kieran Quinn, Chairman of the Balor DCA. “During the project children have learnt how to socially mix with each other, explore new skills and gained a new found confidence in themselves which they can now use throughout their lives. As the course has progressed I have personally seen how well the young people have mixed as a group and this has developed a new sense of friendship and respect across the borders, which would not have been possible if it had not been for this wonderful summer project.”

"I would like to personally congratulate the International Fund For Ireland for supporting this hardworking project, which we know is making a real difference to the lives of young people living in the border areas” concluded the Balor DCA Chairman.

“The summer has just been awesome, I have really enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing if I can do it again next year” exclaimed Caoimhne Quinn, one of the young people taking part in Border Youth, on the dedicated Border Youth Facebook page. “I’ve made loads of new friends and I know we will keep in touch”. Border Youth has utilized every possible communication tool to ensure students were kept informed before, during and after the project. Social media tools including a podcast recording, dedicated Facebook page and website were all utilized to engage the young people on the scheme.

Winston Patterson, board member of the International Fund for Ireland, stated “I am delighted with the very professional way in which the Border Youth event was organised. It was very evident from the performances in both pieces of theatre that an enormous amount of thought and work had gone into the summer camp in preparation for both shows. The sensitive treatment of the themes of respect, diversity and reconciliation was impressive and a true measure of the success of the programme so far."

Strabane District Chairperson, Cllr Michaela Boyle commented at the final night of the scheme, “Over 5 weeks ago these young people did not know each other. In fact many of the young people would not have even traveled to their respective home areas of Strabane or Ballybofey. However through the medium of the arts, the actors you see on the stage have achieved far, far more than putting together an evening of drama and song. This group has developed friendships that will last into adulthood, increased their understanding of other communities and found new levels of confidence in themselves. The reach of this scheme is not confined to the walls of this venue and the students taking part. This year has literally seen the world invited to find out more about Border Youth via a dedicated web site page, Facebook site and a podcast. I must congratulate IFI and everyone involved in developing this unique project, which has allowed everyone to see what great work is being produced by the young people in the North West.”

Social Networking Seminar coming to the Alley

Strabane’s award winning Alley Theatre has announced this week that a major educational arts seminar is to set to take place at the intimate venue, in association with BT and NWIPP. Entitled “Like – Building Digital Networks For The Arts”, this groundbreaking North West event will be free to attend for North West students and people working within the Arts Industry.

It is anticipated over 250 students and local artists will benefit from this conference, which will offer various social media workshops offered by Derry’s Nerve Centre and the opportunity to hear leading social media commentators. Throughout the day participants will explore how individuals, whether from an arts or business background can develop a serious and profitable presence via various social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and My Space.

John Kerr, Alley Theatre Manager stated “We have invited students from across Tyrone to take part in this interactive seminar. Students will be able to learn more about new developments in social media and new skills. Various workshops will be on offer from, how to set up a podcast, to video and movie editing, designing publicity material for events and business, and animation and social networking. We also have a selection of top guest speakers throughout the day including Andy Ferris from the top Northern Ireland record label Small Town American Records, and Mark Nagurski, the newly appointed Digital Champion for Derry and IT commentator.”

“On the day the seminar will host a special celebrity guest host, who will share their secrets about using social networks in their career. We will also have guest speakers from our partners, BT and NWIPP, who will be sharing with the participants information on how new advances online are changing the way individuals are doing business, and what they expect to see in the future in terms of online communications.”

The Alley Theatre will be hosting this major conference due to a REACH funding award from Arts and Business NI, an organisation which develops and supports business involvement in the Arts. Last years Sounds Like Summer Festival, supported by BT and NWIPP was a major event in the North West, and in recognition for this successful event and partnership, funding has been provided to run this exciting event.

“People are demanding more from the internet as they spend more time on line, whether you’re talking music, videos, websites, blogs or downloads, in our ever increasing digital world, online is the place to be” stated Peter Morris, Consumer Director BT. “As one of the leading providers of superfast broadband we are currently rolling out BT Infinity, our fibre optic technology, across Northern Ireland providing users with an even greater online interactive experience, and all at the speed of light. It is through events such as ‘Like’ that encourage the use of online skills and we are therefore delighted to provide support for this innovative event.”

Beverly Coomber from Arts and Business NI commented ““Arts & Business Northern Ireland is delighted to support The Alley Arts & Conference Centre to develop its creative partnerships with its local and national business sponsors through the Reach Investment Programme. Reach exists to encourage and inspire sustainable relationships, which work to maximize return on investment, meet business objectives and deliver tangible benefit through working with the arts. We would congratulate BT and NWIPP for working with the Alley on “Sounds Like Summer 20:10” and look forward to seeing the outcome of “Like”.

"For anyone considering a career in the creative industries, or perhaps even starting a business, an understanding of social media is already becoming a serious advantage and soon it'll be a necessity. It's great to see forward-thinking events like this working with students to equip them with the skills they'll need to make a real impact." Mark Nagurski, Digital Champion for Derry

John Kerr concluded “As well as local A- Level and GCSE students, we are also inviting local artists, musicians, actors, anybody within the arts fields to register free of charge to hear the guest speakers section. This part of the event starts on September 17th at 10 a.m. sharp. If you work in the arts industry or and want to learn more about developing your presence on the internet for free via social networking, contact the Alley Box Office on 028 7138 4444 to register your details. Students light up the Alley!

Over the summer months you would expect a theatre to "go dark", repair, refresh and prepare for the Autumn season.

As always we never follow the crowd at the Alley and we have all been busy with three major courses doing the summer. Our biggest project so far has been Border Youth, supported by IFI and worked in conjunction with the Balor DCA. Over 40 children both sides of the Donegal/Tyrone border have been taking part in a music and drama camp, which ends this week with a gala performance at the Alley in front of all their parents, friends and family.

we have also worked on Border Crossings, a major Trad Music camp, in association with the An Grainnan Theatre in Letterkenny. This is the first year of the project, which I really hope will build on the fantastic foundations already built upon this year.

Lastly, the Technical Department have been busy training over 12 local people int he dark arts of theatre lighting and sound. The students came from all different backgrounds, some were already working in industry, one was a teacher looking to help with the school shows, 3 were attending Queen's University and some were long term unemployed. Whatever their skills at the start of the course, the group finished the course with a host of new skills, confidence and new friends in the arts. For pics of the students on the course check at the Alley Facebook page, simply click here.

The full story!!!

Over the last two weeks Strabane’s Alley Theatre has been the training centre for over 12 sound and lighting engineers, who have been benefiting from a unique new technical course, supported by Concensus and in association with Derry’s Playhouse Theatre.

The Alley’s Technical Officer, Andrew Orr and his qualified technical team took over 12 participants through a groundbreaking OCN Level 2 Sound and Lighting Qualification, the first time this qualification has been held in Strabane.

“The course participants came from all backgrounds with varying amounts of technical experience in arts venue” commented the Technical officer for the Alley Theatre, Andrew Orr. “As the programme developed you could see the confidence and skill levels increase with every student and I was delighted that on the final session everyone passed the course with top marks.”

“In Northern Ireland the vast majority of people live with a 30 minute drive time of a major arts centre. These centres are a hub of creativity and are now major employers within Northern Ireland. With the announcement of the City of Culture status coming to Derry~Londonderry and arts centres like the Alley Theatre in every major town in the province, the opportunity for employment and further experience for students on our scheme is tremendous. I would like to thank all the participants on the scheme for working so hard and congratulate them on their achievements and personally thank Concensus and the Playhouse theatre for their support during this course.

“Concensus, a new initiative supporting community and voluntary, trade union and other organisations in developing new services, resources, and approaches with the participation of members of their client groups” commented Rosaleen Gallagher from Concensus, who are funding this new initiative at the Alley Theatre, Strabane.

“While the prospectus describes a range of activities for all learners at all levels and backgrounds, two themes that are common to all: participation and sustainable communities. Through a range of activities Concensus supports the participation of learner’s in identifying and addressing local issues through significant but nonetheless achievable local- or issued based – actions. All activities are learner led and learners may achieve recognized certification for their process. We are delighted with the success of this recent OCN Level 2 in Sound and Lighting Course at the Alley and hope the participants succeed in achieving further training, experience and employment in the future.”

John Kerr, Alley Theatre Manager concluded “This OCN Level 2 in Sound and Lighting qualification was only made possible due to the funding and support from Concensus and the Playhouse Theatre, therefore on behalf of the students I would like to thank them for their support. This groundbreaking course will now leave an educational legacy with all the participants, which they can now build upon in their new roles or courses. What happened?

Wow! The last blog post was in May and since then the world has gone mad. Firstly the Anne Frank (+You} exhibition came during May and was a absolute smash hit with with patrons, media and funders.

Over 8000 visitors from across the island of Ireland came to see the exhibition, which included a replica of Anne Frank's bedroom and various panels looking at religious tolerance, racism in Football and Holocausts around the world. The Alley marketing team arranged both BBC, UTV, BBC Radio, Q Network Radio and various press organisations to come down and cover the launch, which included representatives from the Anne Frank Trust UK, Sammy Wilson MLA MP, Steve Nimmons, Ivor Whitten and Mrs Inge Radford, a Holocaust survivor from Austria.

Over a period of 19 days school children, groups and visitors from afar as Wicklow, Dublin, Belfast and May came to visit the exhibition, which was supported by a team of over 10 dedicated volunteers who acted as tour guides every day of the exhibition. The fantastic thing about the volunteers was they brought so much energy, passion and knowledge to visitors, many of whom had only a small amount of knowledge about the story of Anne Frank and her family. The volunteers included A-level history students awaiting their results, an accounts secretary, even a London taxi driver who was spending 3 months on holiday in Ireland, all of them escorted groups around the exhibition, bringing the message and story of Anne Frank alive.

For more information on the Anne Frank (+You} Exhibition, click here.

After the Anne Frank exhibition and the final few shows of the season, including a fantastic comedy gig by Jason Byrne, the Lyric Theatres "The Miser" and a great community show "Through the Years" by Strabane's St Mary's Boys School, the Alley welcomed Sounds Like Summer 2010.

With over 60 band entries from across the island of Ireland, in particular Derry and Belfast, the SLS committee whittled the list down to the final 16 bands. Strabane was well represented by Catalyst, a great local band who made it through to the final and Strabane Irish rapper Gerard i2, who received fantastic public support.

In the end it was Donegal's Turbulent EDDY who won with a stunning final set, clinching recording time in a top studio, a professional video shoot, CD production, photoshoot and media support from the NWIPP. For more information on Sounds Like Summer click here.

So after several major events, massive media coverage and even the launch of a new exhibition by local arts students, it was time to look at the new events guide...phew! The new season is packed with some great shows including a one night only performance from Kevin Bridges, the hot new stand up who is sweeping up the comedy circuit at the moment on Channel 4's "Stand Up For The Week" and "Michael McIntrye's Comedy Roadshow".

10 new exhibitions have been booked, 45+ shows are planned, a new website launch and a few other surprises thrown in...I hope you can forgive the late blogging from the Alley marketing department.

Letters from Ambrose - Strabane's Alley Theatre Blog: Busy times at the Alley

Letters from Ambrose - Strabane's Alley Theatre Blog: Busy times at the Alley

Busy times at the Alley

Its a Bank Holiday weekend, so it offers me a few days to reflect on what's coming up at the Alley this month. Not only will the Anne Frank Exhibition make its NI debut at the Alley, but we have a host of shows coming over the next few weeks.

As always the planning for the events are in an advance state, however the tiny things like cleaning out my filing tray have been pushed back another week or so! If you love variety and meeting new people the Alley certainly offers the whole package and this month is set to be one of the highlights this year in my eyes. The official launch of the Anne Frank Exhibition kicks off on May 10th with TV, Radio and Press all booked to come down, whilst schools and the general public are already contacting the Alley Box Office for more info details.

On top of the present season, we are already planning the winter events guide, with a few special names already booked and ready to make the trip down to Strabane. I can't mention any names yet, however keep an eye out for some very special comedy acts...you have been warned.

Summertime at the Alley

Yesterday the Alley take delivery of the new Alley Events Guide, packed full of top acts from the island of Ireland and further afield, the next season looks like a winner.

I have to admit the summer season guide has been hard work, however we have lots to look forward to. One of the major highlights of the season will be the Anne Frank Exhibition, a stunning piece of work visiting Northern Ireland for the first time. Not only is the Alley presenting the NI launch, but we are also hosting it a full 2-3 months before it even hits Belfast, a major coup for the Alley and the North West. If you want to have a look at the exhibition click here.

If you love comedy, then one gig coming to the Alley not to miss will be the Jason Byrne gig. Last time I saw him perform I had a cracking night, in fact the next morning my ribs ached from all the laughing I had done the night before.

Looking back over the Springtime and the events we have held at the Alley, a major highpoint must be the 9 days of drama in the Strabane Drama Festival. Every performance offered something fantastic and all the local press offered great coverage running up to the festival and post-festival reviews. Raymond McCarron was the official photographer for the festival and I have to admit we got some fantastic shots over the nine days. If you belong to Facebook, check out the Alley Facebook page and the images from the festival. Simply click here.

Once again, the Alley is always hectic and I am still wondering when we might be able to take the foot of the peddle and ease up...but the shows keep coming, the exhibitions keep rolling and I am still excited to see what the next 6 months will bring!

The Anne Frank (+You} Exhibition set to come to the Alley!

Really looking forward to working on this....................

The Alley set to host Northern Ireland
launch of the new Anne Frank Exhibition.

Strabane’s Alley Theatre is set to host the Northern Ireland launch of the award winning Anne Frank (+You} exhibition this May. This groundbreaking exhibition will have its official Northern Ireland launch at the Alley, which organisers say will be supported by a number of workshops and performances for people across Northern Ireland to engage in.

Famous around the world, this poignant exhibition is anticipated to draw in visitors and groups from across the island of Ireland, keen to understand more about the legacy left by Anne Frank and showing the relevance in today’s society of views she expressed in her celebrated diary. At the heart of the exhibition, entitled Anne Frank (+ You} is a life-size replica of her bedroom in the secret annexe above her father's business premises in Amsterdam. This small space is where the Frank family, and four other Jews, spent more than two years in hiding before being betrayed to the Nazis in the summer of 1944.

Visitors will experience the room where Anne confided in her diary about her hopes, ambitions and perceptions about conflict and the human condition. To reach the “secret annexe” room in the exhibition, visitors must first pass through a multi-media display which explores the themes that dominated her life and a tunnel on the Holocaust and genocides around the world. Themes of Identity, Prejudice and Racism, Conflict and Peace, Moral Responsibility, and Freedom and Democracy are all addressed on giant exhibition panels which carry significant excerpts from Anne's diary, along with examples of present day issues in picture and print, whilst televisual displays of teenagers of today discussing the issues in a 21st century context can also be viewed.

The exhibition was developed and is run by the Anne Frank Trust UK, who worked alongside its sister organisation the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, and an award winning creative team, to create a unique and challenging experience for young people that will interest and motivate them. Strabane District Council and the Peace III Programme, managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the North West Peace III Cluster Group are funding the exhibition, which will see thousands tour the exhibition whilst its runs at the Alley Theatre between May 10th - May 29th.

“The story of Anne Frank not only reminds us about what has happened in the past, but also what is happening in society today. This exhibition will be an ideal way to inform our community about the need to stand together and support those in society who need our help and support, whilst protecting their human rights. Anne’s short life shows us what can happen when hatred and extremism goes unchallenged, we therefore intend to challenge and stimulate discussion within our community about what are the best ways forward in offering everyone an equal place in society today” stated Kieran McGuire, Chairman of Strabane District Council.

“The Trust promotes positive attitudes in young people towards differences particularly in age, gender, ethnicity, religion and disability, and encourages people to reject all forms of bigotry. The Trust’s Executive Director Gillian Walnes explained: “The intention of Anne Frank [+ You} is that visitors, particularly youngsters aged 11 to 17, will be able to relate the horrors that befell victims of the Holocaust to the world around them, and recognise the need to challenge injustice and to contribute to a society built on mutual respect and moral courage to prevent such things happening again. This is an exhibition unlike any other that is touring Northern Ireland and will be a major talking point.”

“Over three million people have taken part in Anne Frank Projects in the UK and we are delighted that Strabane District Council and the North West community can share the clear message of peace and tolerance that Anne Frank left to the world over 65 years ago this year” stated Philip Faithful, Chief Executive of Strabane District Council. “Her legacy has not only taught us about the horrors of the Holocaust, but can also serve as an inspiration to young people, making them strive to make a difference in their own lives by becoming more active citizens.”

Richard Collins, a leading Northern Ireland Holocaust expert commented “The Anne Frank (+You} Exhibition” offers visitors the inspiration to break down personal and community suspicions and mistrust, and instead open the hand of friendship across the barriers. Young people in schools, community groups, colleges and so many other places are being inspired by Anne’s story, urged to look beyond our own small ambitions and to create a greater vision which will benefit all of humanity.”

Ms Walnes from the Anne Frank Trust UK concluded she was particularly pleased the exhibition is being launched in Strabane’s prestigious Alley Theatre and Art Gallery, “To have such a visually exciting multimedia display in this stunning venue is going to be terrific for us and the North West of Ireland.” For further information on the forthcoming exhibition visit www.alley-theatre.com or contact the Alley Box Office on 028 7138 4444.

Test Drive the Arts at the Alley!

It's been a hectic time at the Alley over the last few months, so sorry for not blogging away, however now I'm back...and brimming over with news, views and projects to share!

The first thing I must mention is the Alley has recently joined a new project run by Audiences NI, entitled "Test Drive The Arts!". What's it about? Well research has shown that if organisations could attract new patrons via a special guest (free) tickets, it allows them to enjoy the experience, see a new art form and wet their appetite to come back and sample another show, this time by paying for the pleasure. It is open to everyone in NI who have never been to a particular venue, meaning someone like myself could visit the Belfast Opera House or the Riverside Theatre in Coleraine. If you haven't been to the Alley, then this is a great opportunity for you, as we have offered guest tickets for Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club, Kila and Madam Silk....three superb shows which we feel will thrill and excite new patrons to the Alley.

I have to admit I am very excited about the project from a PR perspective and I personally hope it takes off as a sustainable project across NI. It currently works very well in America and Australia, however it has not kept the imagination in the UK. The English version of this scheme has yet to reach it targets for enabling new patrons, even though it has received a large amount of backing from celebs and arts venues.

Alley Theatre scoops major Prestige Access Award

The Alley always prides itself on being based in the heart of the community, serving our community, so this week we were delighted to receive official recognition from the William Keown Trust for our service, design and access for people with disabilities. Let's face it the building is fantastic, however what made me so proud was the the staff were part of this award process.

So far we have launched audio visual presentations for the Strabane Drama Festival, Northern Ireland Photographic Association and Strabane Grammar School. Today we launched a new video from BT Sounds Like Summer champions, King Coma and their new single "On My Side". The band are delighted with the final video, with several leading press and radio critics looking to review it over the coming weeks...watch this space! The Alley wins the National Personal Safety Award!

Northern Ireland’s Alley Theatre has won the prestigious Safer Workplace Award at the National Personal Safety Awards 2009 presented by The Suzy Lamplugh Trust in London last week.

The National Personal Safety Awards were held at the Hilton Hotel in London, with the Alley scooping the top award of the night, the “Safer Workplace Award” sponsored by Royal Mail. This was a tremendous achievement for the Alley Theatre, who faced tough competition from organizations from across the UK and Northern Ireland in making the finals shortlist and was delighted to be announced winners at this star studded gala night.

“The Alley Theatre is delighted to be recognized for our hard work in promoting personal safety amongst staff and user groups” commented John Kerr, Alley Theatre manager. “The Suzy Lamplugh Trust is recognised around the world as being the leading authority on personal safety and to win recognition at their recent awards ceremony was a tremendous achievement for The Alley Theatre, Strabane District Council and our staff”

The judges said that measures the Alley Theatre took to improve personal safety was incredibly thorough, and what particularly impressed them was the fact that as well as risk assessments, training and policies, they actually effected a culture change, so that all employees are now encouraged to openly discuss any safety concerns and to plan their working day with safety in mind. It was very clear to the judges that this was not a tick-box exercise, but that the Alley Theatre places the personal safety of its staff at the heart of everything it does. Also shortlisted for the Safer Workplace Awards were Norfolk County Council and EDF Energy.

Ann Elledge, Director of Personal Safety at Suzy Lamplugh Trust, said “The National Personal Safety Awards were established by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust two years ago to recognise the achievements of organisations, workplaces and individuals around the country in promoting personal safety. We were extremely impressed by the calibre of nominees this year and The Alley Theatre were deserving winners against impressive competition.” For more information about the National Personal Safety Awards, visit www.suzylamplugh.org/awards.

Arts and Business Course proves a great success!

I took part in an "Art of the Pitch" course earlier this year which I really enjoyed and which I feel I took great benefit from. The links made on the course with fellow particpants and potential sponsors has already led to several successful relationships, including the securing of a performance at the Alley by one of the particpants and cementing the sponsorship relationship with one of the panel.

Arts and Business have now profiled the event as a case study on their website, check it out at http://www.artsandbusiness.org.uk/Case-studies/2009/oct_dec/ni_artofthepitch.aspx

Personal Safety First at the Alley!

The Alley Theatre received some wonderful news this week as the highly respected Suzy Lamplugh Trust, one of the worlds leading personal safety experts, short listed the venue for the prestigious "Safer Workplace" award at their annual awards ceremony set to be held in the Hilton Tower Hotel in London in November 2009.
The National Personal Safety Awards were established to celebrate and highlight organisations around the UK who are providing exceptional procedures and support in personal safety issues for staff. With the new nomination, the Alley can now seen as one of the top 3 organisations in the UK for putting personal safety of staff at the top of their agenda, an amazing achievement for this wonderful regional theatre.

The Alley Theatre certainly impressed the panel of judges, who have been inundated with nominations from around the UK. David Adams from the Suzy Lamplugh Trust said: “We were delighted to receive a nomination from The Alley Theatre for our National Personal Safety Awards. Their unique and comprehensive application exhibits how seriously the issue of employee personal safety is taken by the management of the Alley Theatre, and we are very pleased to shortlist them for this national award.”

The Suzy Lamplugh Trust was established in 1986 after the disappearance of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh, a 25 year old estate agent who disappeared after she went to meet an unknown client. So far her body has not been found. However, she has been presumed murdered and legally declared dead. Her parents, Paul and Diana Lamplugh, believed that Suzy, like most people at that time - and even now - was simply unaware of the possible dangers that individuals can face in society. Paul and Diana founded the Trust to highlight the risks people face and to offer advice, action and support to minimize those risks. The Trust is now based at The National Centre for Personal Safety in central London, working with a wide range of partners in the public, private and voluntary sector, always seeking new ways to keep people safe from violence and aggression.

Strabane is a great place to live and work, however the Alley has to ensure they take staff safety seriously. Thankfully the Alley staff had not had to suffer any incidents of violence and aggression from patrons, however at least our staff are trained, prepared and supported if something did ever happen.

For more information about personal safety in the workplace click here to be redirected to the official Suzy Lamplugh Trust Website.
